Do you remember what you wanted to be when you were a kid? That question isn’t hard for me.
I grew up watching my father take photos, and marvelling at them developing in the small
spaces he turned into his darkroom. It was a curious thing, to see images appear.
To seemingly create something out of nothing. I was hooked. My love of photography was born.
But my journey here isn’t as straightforward as that. Like a lot of childhood dreams, mine made
way for reality. A life in banking came first. And while not a natural choice for a creative, the
experience gave me insight into people, and importantly, was a reminder of where my heart
Realising there is more to life than working towards someone else’s dream, I pursued my own
passion instead. I studied photography on the Kapiti Coast, then in 2005, began work as a
professional photographer, working throughout New Zealand and overseas, before now basing
myself in the Manawatu.
I work to engage and inspire.
I love the limitless world of creating work that engages and inspires others. I’m fascinated by
form and capturing it in a way that delivers drama and emotion; that brings a different time,
place, or person to life, in the same way I saw my dad’s images take shape with a hint of
mystery. I’ve held on to the intrigue of creating something from nothing.
The camera is my tool, expression is my trade.
I know that the essence is in the subject; it’s up to me to capture it with my camera in a way that
isolates that feeling so you can experience it for yourself through an image. Therefore, I don’t
over complicate things. I know how to bring out the best in my subjects, I put people at ease,
and I highlight their unique and wonderful beauty.
Today, I work with brands who have big ideas, and the belief that I can help bring them to life.
They’re looking for an edge, and understand the role that photography plays in the way they
connect with their audience. I enjoy collaborating on creative briefs, and can shoot either in my
studio or on location.
We all have something bigger that drives us.
Mine is my family, and the life we share on a small lifestyle block in the Horowhenua/Manawatu
region of New Zealand. That’s where you’ll find me waiting for gum trees to grow, seeking out
the new hiding spots for our chicken’s eggs, flipping pancakes with my kids, and seeking out
inspiration for new work.
